Construction continues at local courts

(Seguin) — The city of Seguin is investing heavily in the popularity of pickleball. The city recently began construction of a large pickleball facility at the location that once served as the tennis courts at the old Saegert campus in downtown Seguin. The new facility now officially has a new name. The Seguin City Council approved the name for the complex, which gives a nod to its history as part of Saegert.

Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones says they sought community input on the name, and then that list was sent to the Seguin Parks and Recreation Advisory Board for consideration.

“I had a total of 189 come in –various names of Pickle Dill, The Real Dill, Pecan and Pickle, things like that. The park board got all of those names and they had some suggestions as well. So, what came out of the meeting that we had with the park board on Aug. 1 was four choices for you and the themes are if you look at it, Seguin is kind of the first name of it. You also have Saegert in there as well given the history of the school. The second name is Pickleball. The third name can be the complex, park, or plaza,” said Jones.

The chosen name may not reflect some of the more colorful suggestions, but it does get straight to the point. The facility will be known as the Seguin-Saegert Pickleball Complex.  Jones says that the name reflects all of the themes that stood out in the suggested names, plus the word complex helps people to understand the many amenities that will be offered at the site.

“You can see Seguin stands out, pickleball stands out, complex, park or plaza. You’ve got the pickleball courts but you are also going to have a restroom there and you are also going to have a pavilion there and some picnic tables and things like that so that is what that whole area is going to look like – parking, courts, restrooms, a pavilion with probably a grill,” said Jones.

Jones says there were dozens of names submitted, and many of them were variations of something related to the pickle, but he says in the end there were certain themes that seemed to ring through.  He shared a few of those names during the last city council meeting.

“Picklelish, Real Dill, Sweet Pickle Park, Tickle Pickle – the park board took all of these and narrowed it down to four options for you,” said Jones.

Jones says the complex will have some nice amenities, and he thinks it will be a place that attracts local people and visitors.  He says there will be lots of covered seating out there as well.

“It’s going to be a pretty large pavilion. I think it’s going to be bigger than the one at Park West, probably have about 12 picnic tables under there. It’s fairly large,” said Jones.

Seguin-Saegert Pickleball Complex is located on 1.3 acres of public land that was purchased by the city of Seguin from the Seguin ISD. The city purchased the tennis courts and some old unused buildings on that same side of the street.  The complex will have an official address of 418 W. Mountain Street.
