With scorching-hot temperatures around the corner, Seguin Fire Department begins its annual campaign to help keep city residents safe and comfortable at home.

The department’s annual fan drive kicks off on Thursday, June 1.

“Fans are critical to keeping those without air conditioning or who are on a fixed income comfortable and safe during the hot Texas summers,” Seguin Fire Chief Dale Skinner said.

The Seguin Fire Department’s yearly drive provides box fans to city of Seguin residents who need them to beat the often relentless heat and humidity the city experiences.

The fan drive provides relief for families of households within city limits that do not have air conditioning, said Lisa Trevino, Fire/EMS assistant.

Trevino heads up the program at the city’s Municipal Court/Fire Administration building, 660 S. Highway 46, where eligible residents may collect fans through Labor Day.

“There are still homes out there that don’t have air conditioning,” Trevino said. “This does help with some relief during these hot summers. It seems like every year it’s getting hotter and hotter.”

City residents without air conditioning are eligible to receive a fan. Every other year, households are free to pick up a free fan, limited to one fan per household, Trevino said. Last year’s fan recipients are ineligible to get one this year, she said.

Pick up is scheduled 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and recipients must present a photo ID and proof of residency.

Department and city staffers also collect box fans for distribution. Anyone wanting to donate fans can deliver them to the Municipal Court/Fire Administration building.

The fan drive works to help residents as it was designed, Trevino said.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “I think this program is a great benefit to our community and, thankfully, we have great sponsors out there that will help.”
