Main Street provides Downtown Master Plan update

(Seguin) — Progress continues to be made on Seguin’s Downtown Master Plan as the Seguin Main Street Program, City of Seguin, and our consultant, Freese and Nichols, Inc., begin to develop projects, priorities, tasks, and more that will develop into the community’s vision for downtown Seguin.

At the recent community open house in May, the community was able to hear the plan’s vision and goals and hear what the community is saying about downtown.

The key themes that we heard from the community about the needs for downtown included:

• Capitalize on outdoor spaces to facilitate public gatherings
• Increase pedestrian and bike safety and connectivity
• Improve branding and wayfinding
• Support small business growth
• Increase the quantity and diversity of retail and dining offerings
• Improve building façade aesthetics
• Address infrastructure issues
• Capitalize on and maintain the authentic and historic character of downtown
• Improve vehicular traffic through downtown
• Become a destination location to draw local and regional visitors.

From these themes, a vision and goals were created. The vision for downtown Seguin is that:

“Downtown Seguin is an exciting and welcoming destination for locals and visitors that celebrates our beauty, grit, and drive while remaining true to our local history and variety of cultures that shape our future.”

To get this vision, five goals have been created and each goal will have several objectives underneath it. The five goals are

• Become a regional destination.
• Strengthen the relationship between the local community and downtown.
• Effectively tell the story of downtown.
• Attract and sustain a variety of businesses.
• Conduct physical improvements to facilitate a vital place.

The consultant will be attending the August Main Street Advisory Board meeting to continue to build out the objectives and projects that will fall under these five goals and will go into an implementation schedule.
