The Texas Department of Transportation announced work will begin Jan. 8 on two stretches of Interstate 10 in Guadalupe County.

Contractors are set to start widening the highway and making safety improvements between FM 464 and State Highway 130, said Tanya Brown, public information officer with TxDOT San Antonio district.

The project also includes resurfacing between State Highway 123 and SH 130 east of Seguin, she said. Motorists should be aware for several reasons, Brown said.

“They could see some delays depending on when the contractor does work,” she said. “A lot of our projects in the San Antonio district, we try to do evening or night work. That alleviates some delays.”

Motorists can avoid slowdowns at certain times of the year and certain hours of the day, Brown said. Contractors sometimes are unable to work on projects depending on weather conditions and other factors, she said.

Webber, LLC of New Braunfels is expected to work on the more than $245 million project through fall 2029, Brown said. The work consists of reconstructing the main lanes of I-10 by expanding the existing four lanes to six lanes, improving entrance/exit ramps and rehabilitating existing structures and one-way frontage road conversion, she said.

“Like any lanes that were built whenever, a lot of that is going to be rehabilitated and made to meet our current standards opposed to what it was,” Brown said. “All the frontage roads are going to be converted from two-way to one-way.”

Though construction rarely sits well with all motorists, improvements to I-10 in the county are necessary, she said. The county, area and region’s expansive growth necessitates roadway improvements that will help those moving to the area as well as those who are already here, Brown said.

TxDOT’s work will help to improve safety and mobility for all, she said.

“There are a lot of people moving to the area that requires us to add more lanes to increase traffic,” Brown said. “When we do that, it improves safety and mobility.”

TxDOT will place signs and digital message boards in the area notifying people on the roads of the upcoming construction, Brown said. The agency encourages motorists to use alternate routes and avoid the work zone if possible, Brown said.

While dealing with possible delays, motorists should continue to consider the bigger picture, she said.

“Have patience,” Brown said. “They need to remain vigilant when driving through the work zones not only for themselves but for the crewmen.”
